KGSA Dormitory

Need & Opportunity

In Kibera, Africa’s largest informal settlement, only 40% of children attend school on any given day. Filling a critical need in this region is Kibera Girls Soccer Academy or KGSA. It initially opened in 2002, using the power of soccer to gather girls around teamwork and camaraderie. Four years later, KGSA expanded to give free education to high school girls.

After raising enough funds in 2015, KGSA hired a UK-based firm to project manage the build of a dormitory alongside their existing school, providing a much-needed haven for young women pursuing education. The firm promised an 18-month completion, but after three years, the project had yet to break ground, prompting a need for change. With precious time lost and diminishing financial resources, KGSA engaged Construction for Change to take over the project management.

Solution & Value Add

We immediately secured a local team to finalize all drawings. We then began the value engineering process to change materials that could achieve the original vision for the space within the remaining budget. After years of delays, CfC’s construction expertise drastically accelerated the project, overseeing the completion in just 6-months. KGSA’s dormitory opened its doors in July of 2021, five years after its initial start.
